Vedic Garnets. Flawless Rhodolite Garnets. Uparatna for sun. Perfect alternative to ruby. |
Vedic Garnets |
Superior quality Garnets have a long tradition as Jyotish remedies, allowing us to wear natural, untreated gemstones of excellent clarity at reasonable prices. (Almost all rubies, the primary gem of the sun, have been thermally-enhanced and are too heavily "included" (imperfect) to be suitable for Jyotish recommendations. Recent changes in thermal-enhancement techniques have added "fracture-filling" to the list of ruby enhancements. Fracture-filling is very deceptive because the filling material is intended to disguise serious fractures that completely disqualify a gem for remedial purposes.) Flawless, enhancement-free garnets of fine color are always better than rubies that have been thermally-enhanced and fracture-filled. |

Dark Red Garnet Flawless clarity. This gem has a "window" in its center. A window results when the gem's proportions allow light to exit the back of the gem instead of being reflected back to the eye of the viewer. Windows don't have any effect from a Jyotish point of view but they do reduce the cost considerably because the gem markets prefer stones that don't have windows.

Beautiful, Intense, Deep Red. This deep red gem is darker and more red than it appears in this photograph. Its clarity grade is MI1--this makes it much more affordable. The inclusion that gives this gem its MI1 clarity grade is visible to a trained eye when examined carefully under ideal lighting conditions but it doesn't show up in this picture because it's masked by the dark tones of the gem. My preference is for better clarity but If you must have a fine, deep color, large garnet at an affordable price, this is your gem! item: #g484

Vedic Garnet Clarity Grading: Vedic astrology determines garnet clarity grades with the unaided eye. Jyotish garnets for Vedic astrology should always be examined with magnification before determining the clarity grade but clarity grades are assigned without magnification. This is also the procedure at the major Gem Labs: first examine the gemstone with a gemological This is different from diamond clarity grading where clarity grades are assigned at 10X magnification. The highest clarity grade at the American Gemological Laboratory is "Free of Inclusion" and the highest grade at the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences is "Flawless". According to the Gemological Institute of America's Revised Colored Stone Grading Lab Manual, the top clarity grade is "Eye Clean". These grades: "Free of Inclusion Gem / Flawless Gem / Eye Clean Gem " are assigned when an experienced, fully-trained gem-grader is unable to see any inclusions in a gemstone examined under ideal lighting conditions and without magnification. When examined with a gemological microscope, almost all gems show some natural inclusions. Even a garnet graded "Flawless Garnet " or "Free of Inclusion Garnet " or "Eye-clean Garnet " almost certainly contains inclusions visible at some level of magnification. (As do most Flawless diamonds.) Flawless Garnets / Eye Clean Garnets / Free-of-Inclusion Garnets show no inclusions to the unaided eye when examined by a trained, experienced grader using an ideal light source. LI1/LI2 inclusions are so small that most people cannot see them without magnification. HI1 (Highly Included) show fairly obvious inclusions and they are never acceptable for Vedic astrological Jyotish gems. |
