Clients often ask: "What should I look for in a Jyotish Diamond?" |
Here's how the "4Cs" of diamond grading (Color, Clarity, Cut, Cost) relate to diamonds used for Jyotish recommendations: Color: The most commonly used color grading system is GIA's "D to Z" system, with D being absolutely free of any tint whatsoever. The top grades in this system are D, E, F--very expensive for an extremely small difference in color compared to G and H color. At the bottom of the alphabetical system, the tints in diamond become strong enough to become "Fancy Colors". My recommendation is to select a G or H color diamond. These have just a very slight tint and can be considered to be "white" for our purposes. If price is not important to you, then you may want a stone in the D E F range but it isn't necessary. If price is very important to you, consider a diamond in the I or J color range. Clarity: Flawless, VVS and VS diamonds have no inclusions visible to the unaided eye. So, you can select a diamond anywhere on the scale of Flawless, VVS to VS, as long as the stone is free of black inclusions when examined with a properly illuminated gemological microscope. If price is not important to you, you can buy a diamond in the highest clarity grades but VS stones are just as good, without the premium price. Just keep in mind that black spots, no matter how small, are never acceptable and Imperfect diamonds are never acceptable. If you must save money on a diamond, choose good clarity and economize on shape, proportions, color or size. Cut: Here's an area to save money! Many diamonds are now being cut to "Ideal" proportions. These stones command a premium of approximately 30% over a standard proportion diamond. But, there is no difference, from a Jyotish point-of-view, between Ideal proportions and standard proportions. Also, shape isn't important for us. Sometimes non-round shapes are available at a big discount from round shape. Cost: Do your shopping! Search online for a good diamond-cutter who offers stones certified by a recognized gem lab. Never buy an uncertified diamond! Treatments: Not yet as prevalent as treatments in colored stones. I think certified Canadian diamonds are less likely to have been treated. Fluorescence: Many diamonds have noticeable fluorescence that alters their apparent color when viewed in daylight. (Daylight, and some other light sources, stimulate fluorescence in diamonds). Fluorescence will be noted on the certificate--don't buy a fluorescent diamond.
