Do you need an affordable 3 carat blue sapphire? This gem is cut to extreme proportions: its depth is almost equal to its width. This style of cutting is sometimes referred to as "native" cutting because it completely disregards modern proportions! Its face-up size is very small for its weight because the stone is much too deep for its width. But this doesn't impair its value for Jyotish because it's still reasonably symmetrical; it just doesn't have the proportions demanded by the modern jewelry trade. The gem-cutter who cut and polished this gem selected facet angles that maximized yield--this means that he chose proportions giving a finished stone that has a small face-up size for its weight. This gem's "pavilion" (bottom portion of the stone) is deeper than average. This proportion variation doesn't affect a gem worn for beneficial Jyotish influence but it allowed the cutter to keep the finished weight above 3 carats. Rare Shape! Beautiful rich blue, finest clarity, wonderful brilliance and excellent proportions--this gem is everything a fine gemstone should be. Round shape sapphires of this quality are extremely rare; only a very, very few gems like this are ever found and when they are, the miners rejoice! The only drawback is the price...this quality and shape command a premium price that I had to pay the miners to acquire this rare gem. From a Jyotish point of view, shape isn't important. This stone only makes sense for you if round shape is your personal preference and you don't mind paying the premium price that goes with fine quality round sapphires. If round isn't extremely important to you, your money is better spent on a larger stone of comparable quality.
