Reliable Gem Selection Requires

a fully qualified Gemologist, trained to scientifically eliminate all treated, synthetic and imitation material. Why? Because modern manufacturing methods have produced thousands of new treatments, imitations and synthetic "gems".

Not one of those treated, imitation or synthetic "gems" is suitable for Jyotish.

Your Gemologist should also have the gem-selection skills passed down by Jyotish Pandits/Vedic Astrologers. This ancient knowledge ensures the chosen gems live up to ancient Vedic requirements for effectiveness and safety.

"Natural" Sapphires:

sapphires found in the earth as opposed to synthetic stones made in a factory.

The Term "Natural" does not mean freedom from treatment. Any stone that comes out of the ground is natural.

Almost all natural sapphires are thermally-enhanced after coming out of the mine but are still called "natural" because they came out of the ground.

Heat-treatment / Thermal-enhancement:

"cooking" a sapphire in an industrial furnace at approximately 1900 degrees Celsius. Creates color in a previously dull, gray stone. Alters the chemical balance and internal structure of the stone.

Diffusion Treatment:

heat-treatment plus titanium or beryllium added to the stone. Artificially colors the surface of the stone (easily detected) or all the way through (difficult to detect).

The best protection against diffusion-treatment is to reject all heat-treated sapphires. If a sapphire isn't heat-treated, it can't be diffusion-treated.

Natural Blue Sapphires, Natural Yellow Sapphires and Natural White Sapphires

must be free of thermal-enhancement (heat-treatment) to be effective. Heat-treated sapphires are of no use for Jyotish. Almost all sapphires in today's market have been thermally-enhanced.

Unheated Sapphire:

a sapphire whose color is formed entirely by nature, not by human intervention; a sapphire free of "thermal-enhancement".
